Critical Results Reporting

Our Critical Results Reporting service represents an innovative, dedicated communication hub within the radiology department (or affiliated healthcare system) designed to ensure rapid, reliable and closed-loop delivery of urgent or life-impacting imaging findings to the attending Physician.

When a Radiologist interprets an imaging study and identifies a critical result—such as a ruptured aneurysm, large pulmonary embolism, intracranial hemorrhage, tension pneumothorax, or other finding requiring immediate intervention they can initiate a formal request for direct discussion rather than relying solely on routine reporting channels, paging systems, or direct attempts to contact physicians themselves.

The unique aspect of this system lies in its streamlined, 24/7 facilitated connection process:

  1. Request Initiation — The radiologist submits a request through an integrated workflow tool, a unique, proprietary system developed by AHC. This flags the need for physician-to-physician dialogue to discuss the findings, clarify clinical context, or guide next steps.
  2. Call Center Activation — Trained call center agents, available around the clock, immediately receive and prioritize the request. These agents serve as efficient intermediaries, relieving radiologists of time-consuming efforts to locate and reach busy attending physicians, especially during off-hours, weekends, or high-volume periods.
  3. Physician Location & Connection — Leveraging up-to-date on-call schedules, electronic directories (e.g., integrated with systems like Epic or mobile heartbeat directories), and established escalation protocols, agents quickly identify and contact the appropriate attending physician or covering provider. They confirm availability and facilitate a direct, live connection—typically via phone bridge, secure transfer, or conference call—between the radiologist and the attending physician.
  4. Documentation & Closure — Once the connection is made, the call center logs key details (e.g., time of request, physician contacted, connection time, and confirmation of discussion). This supports compliance with accreditation standards (such as Joint Commission requirements for timely communication of critical results), quality tracking, and medico-legal protection through auditable records.

This setup addresses common challenges in traditional critical results workflows, including

  • Playing phone tag
  • Outdated contact information
  • Physician unavailability during shift changes
  • Delays that can impact patient outcomes

By centralizing the process, the call center can:

  • Reduces administrative burden on radiologists
  • Accelerates communication (often achieving connections within minutes of the request)
  • Enhance patient safety through reliable, documented delivery of time-sensitive information.
